Take a Break from Virtual Reality

10 03 2008

How connected are you?  Could you go a whole day without checking your cell phone, your e-mail, your facebook, your instant messaging…could you do it?  Are you a techno-addict?  If so maybe think about taking a secular sabbith.  Go one day without it all.  A journalist for the NY times actually recommends in his article appropriately titled “I need a Virtual Break. No, really.”

Robot Invasion

10 03 2008

I watched I, Robot and thought it was ridiculous and would never happen.  I guess I was partially wrong.  Military experts in the article I read, claim that terrorist may use unmanned drones in aerial invasion…robots.  It’s frightening to think that can happen, we are the brink of the lap-top surpasssing the capability of human brain function, how are we supposed to handle robots!!!

In case Godzilla Attacks…

10 03 2008

Cloverfield was a huge box office success, and because of this it prompted a blogging discussion that made me laugh: How to stop a 500 foot monster.  I mean i guess it never crossed my mind…wait wait..not true.  When I was 7 I was convinced Godzilla was in fact real and just waiting to launch an attack.  Blaim my older brothers, if only I had had that information then.

Internet:Translated

10 03 2008

Ok Ok I know what the internet is, I’m not living under a rock.  This article is funny, sarcastic, and educational.  If you can make me laugh while teaching me something…well then props.  There was one point in the article that lead to a profound moment for me –>”All we need to do is pay attention to what the Internet really is. It’s not hard. The Net isn’t rocket science. It isn’t even 6th grade science fair, when you get right down to it. We can end the tragedy of Repetitive Mistake Syndrome in our lifetimes — and save a few trillion dollars’ worth of dumb decisions — if we can just remember one simple fact: the Net is a world of ends. You’re at one end, and everybody and everything else are at the other ends.”

Could you live with out the internet…apparently this boy couldn’t

6 03 2008

This article is all most unbelievable. A 15 year old boy shot and killed his father bcause he wouldn’t let him use the internet!! I love the internet it’s great, it would be depressing to be denied it…but not so depressing I’d kill someone over. WOW.

Facebook Fatigue…it could happen

The Britney Factor

6 03 2008

I’ll admit that when I’m in the check-out line I scan the tabloids that include Britney Spears. I can’t help she’s kind of a fascinating train-wreck. Yet I see more and more blogs complaining about why we are obsessed with Britney Spears. One blogger threatned to move to Canada. The reason Britney Spears is so famous is because we, the consumers, allowed it to happen. Britney is a brand that the world bought into and continues too, even though she’s no longer even marketable.

Ill never complain about the means it which techology has increased. Im a generation of inter-connectednees. It’a awesome. Yet with this advance, I feel things get blown out of porportion. Britney is in magazines, on the tv, everywhere on the internet, blogs, social networks..the whole enchilada. Its possible in this technological framed world to basicallly over do it.

For the most part it rocks…but don’t complain about the world’s love of Britney, it’s our fault.

When Virtual Reality trumps reality..

4 03 2008

I found an article covered by CBS about second life and I found it really interesting.  It talks about people who lead better lives in their “second life” then they could ever hope to in thier first.  It makes sense you could own land, a nice house, lead a wealthy life for only 10$ on second life.  You don’t have to worry about dying, there is an absence of fear.  You can make friends, you can even make your self more attractive..all with a click of a mouse.

But the question is…is that beneficial?  What happens when one begins to view this “second life” as thier actual life, or what happens when thier “second life” is so satifactory that it highlights the lows in a person’s real life?

But hey I think second life is sweet, I can buy a chanel dress for like 6$…if only it were real!

Gossip Website gets mean…um duh..

4 03 2008

Ok, this article on Wired Campus about JuicyCampus.com made me laugh.  JuicyCampus.com is a gossip blog created by Matt Ivestor. It has been called to the carpet because apparently the contents of the site are offending people. C’mon!!! It’s a gossip site what did people expect.  When has gossip ever had good intentions.  What did Ivestor expect, that people would comment about how nice and great their other peers are? I am a  journalism major and I know that the best stories deal in scandal, tragedy, humiliation or all three.  Good, nice, happy stories don’t make journalists money and gossip sites don’t make friends.
